By Kyra Rosenblatt ’25

Over the course of this past year, my classmates and I have been studying different areas of medical sciences. Along with learning about different disease processes, our teachers, Dr. Karen Goodman and Dr. Avigayil Elkin, set up different case-based simulations that my peers and I would have to assess, diagnose and initiate treatment.

When our teachers came to class with a duffle bag, we knew that our class was going to be an interesting one. Inside this bag was a full size manikin that we would continue to use throughout the year for our experiential learning. We would start class by assigning roles such as patient, family of the patient, doctors and nurses. Just like in a real emergency, the 鈥渄octors鈥 would start by checking the ABCs: airway, breathing and circulation. After that was done, the 鈥渄octors鈥 would dive deeper into the case in order to identify the source of the patient鈥檚 problem, and work as a team to carry out the evaluation and management. We had many opportunities to learn about disease processes, and medical procedures followed by simulated cases and hands-on training related to what we had learned.

After engaging in this type of learning throughout the year, we went on a trip to the EMS training center in Paramus where Mr. Infield, our school EMT, is an instructor. There, we saw many different types of manikins that are used to train volunteer EMTs. While the manikin we use at school is a basic model that we adapt for our learning purposes, the EMS training center had more complex manikins. For example we saw a pregnant manikin who could deliver a baby, teaching EMTs skills they may need in their clinical practice. We had an opportunity to give CPR to a manikin that gave automated feedback on how well we were doing our chest compressions. Lastly, to end off the trip, we were able to step inside a real ambulance and see how they are used to save lives every day.

At the training center, we had hands-on exposure to manikins with a higher level of realism and feedback, giving us a chance to see how simulation and innovation in medicine is used in training medical professionals. Having spent the year participating in simulations of real life emergencies with our medical science elective at 91影视, it was amazing to see how a similar approach to medical simulation is used in real life training of EMTs.

Shortly before Shavuot, six Yeshivat 91影视 Night Seder regulars made a siyum on Masechet Megillah: Shai Hahn 鈥23, Yosef Feldman 鈥24, Jonathan Rosenberg 鈥24, Tamar Rosenfeld 鈥23, Ari Spivack 鈥23, and Judah Vogel 鈥24. More siyumim by other Night Seder participants are expected to follow, as other chavrutot work their way through.

鈥淎t 91影视 Night Seder special attention is given to ensure that everyone who wants a chavrusa finds one,鈥 said Spivack, who will be attending Yeshivat Har Etzion in the fall. 鈥淟ooking around the beis medrash makes me feel a part of something truly special. Whether it鈥檚 the warm chevra at Night Seder that learn together or Chidon, there is a feeling of community and belonging to Talmud Torah at 91影视 that pulls you in and kept me motivated to come back again and again to be a part of it.鈥

Vogel鈥檚 appreciation for this learning community was reflected in a daf that particularly stood out to him. 鈥淚鈥檇 have to say that my favorite thing I鈥檝e learned was on daf zayin of Taanis,鈥 he recalls. 鈥淚t talks about the power of chavrusa learning and how when people learn together they sharpen each other鈥檚 skills. It鈥檚 especially powerful because I learned it in Night Seder in a chavrusa where I see the benefits of chavrusa learning firsthand.鈥

Senior Josh Knoll emphasized the role that other students have played in his growth. 鈥淭he students at 91影视 have made a huge impact on my Torah learning experience,鈥 he said 鈥淭hey have challenged me and inspired me and I know these friendships will last a lifetime. I鈥檝e also had the amazing opportunity to learn Gemara and Chumash every Thursday night at Night Seder b鈥檆havruta. Learning closely with a learning partner has helped me dive deeper into what we are learning and gaining another person鈥檚 perspective has opened my eyes to other ways of thinking.鈥

Knoll, who will be attending Yeshivat HaKotel in the fall, served this year as co-captain of the Chidon HaTanach club alongside fellow senior Rosenfeld, who will attend Migdal Oz. 鈥淲hen I was given the opportunity to co-lead the Chidon HaTanach Club, I was thrilled,鈥 he recounted. 鈥淚 love studying and preparing for the Chidon competition, and I was super excited to have the opportunity to really share my love of Torah and Chidon with other students.鈥

Rosenfeld notes that her favorite text to study has been Shmuel Bet. 鈥淚 learned it with multiple people at once, and each person I learned it with had different insights, nuanced close-readings and sophisticated analysis that made me read the same pesukim in completely new ways,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hile learning Shmuel Bet in this way, I truly appreciated that there are shivim panim leTorah.鈥

鈥淲hen someone else is excited about the same thing you are, you can鈥檛 help but become more excited,鈥 said sophomore Ilan Romm, who came third place in the Dr. Shimshon Isseroff Chidon HaTanach USA national finals this year. 鈥淲hen you become more excited, so does the other person, so an infinite cycle of excitement is created. Learning with friends as part of Chidon and Night Seder not only pushes yourself and your chaburah to learn more, but makes you wish to share this surplus of excitement and learning with everyone else outside of these clubs.鈥

The value of community is one echoed across the beit midrash. 鈥淭he community at 91影视 has been so supportive, and I really think it鈥檚 a testament to the school as well as specifically talented and dedicated teachers that the Torah-learning community has become so robust,鈥 said junior Maya Tratt, who came in seventh place in this year鈥檚 International Chidon HaTanach for Youth and is poised to lead 91影视鈥檚 Chidon Club next year.

In addition, the students emphasized unequivocally how important 91影视鈥檚 faculty has been to their growth in Torah. 鈥淚 think one of the highlights of 91影视 is the ability to have an intimate and close connection to the rebbeim and the other Torah faculty,鈥 said Hahn, who will be attending Yeshivat Kerem B鈥橸avneh (KBY) in the fall. 鈥淭he things I鈥檝e learned from my rebbeim over the past four years of being in 91影视 have greatly impacted how I learn, approach my learning and act toward people in the real world. For example, this year, I had Rabbi [Noah] Gardenswartz for shiur, and I learned many skills from him, but one of the most important things I learned from him was mesorah. Hearing how he talks about the Tannaim, Amoraim and Rishonim makes them not just words on a page but real, living, breathing people in the classroom with you and who you are having a dialogue with.鈥

鈥淭he most meaningful part of my Torah learning at 91影视 has been the relationships I have cultivated with my rebbeim and teachers during their classes,鈥 Knoll agreed. 鈥淭he Torah learning opportunity that I look forward to most every week is Rabbi [Joshua] Wald鈥檚 Thursday night Mishmar. In addition, Rabbi [Yair] Shahak and Rabbi [Asher] Bush have played a huge role in helping us prepare for and organize Chidon HaTanach related events. They have gone out of their way to make sure that we have as much study material as possible and that all the logistics are taken care of. They have been our biggest supporters.鈥

Rabbi Shahak, who won the 2016 International Chidon HaTanach for Adults, coaches 91影视鈥檚 Chidon HaTanach Club, giving students study strategies, comprehensive questions, maps, mnemonic devices and pasuk-by-pasuk breakdowns of difficult Chidon material.

鈥淧ersonally I would not have been able to accomplish whatever I managed without the help of Rabbi Shahak as well as a cohort of immensely wonderful friends and teachers who were always supporting me,鈥 said Tratt.

In the case of junior Yosef Feldman, who will serve as head of Night Seder and captain of the boys Torah Bowl team next year, his lunchtime chavruta is someone extra special: his own father, 91影视 faculty member Rabbi Jonathan Feldman. The two learn together every lunchtime. 鈥淚 appreciate the fact that the beis medrash is open all day, allowing me to learn during my free time,鈥 said Yosef. 鈥淎t Yeshivat 91影视, there are numerous rebbeim available in the beis to assist you with any shailos related to Halacha, studies or life.鈥

Students experienced first hand what it is like to do archival research, exploring some of the incredible youth autobiographies from the 1930s held in YIVO鈥檚 archives all while under the guidance of YIVO鈥檚 expert staff of archivists, librarians and historians.

鈥淚t was an amazing opportunity to learn about our history,鈥 said Ahava Bak ’25. 鈥淭he direct primary sources tell us so much on events and life all throughout Jewish history.鈥

For some students, it was also a chance to learn about the richness of East European Jewish life before the Holocaust. 鈥淲hile YIVO has plenty of material from the time of the Shoah, there is so much more,鈥 said Kimberly Guttman ’25. 鈥淵IVO鈥檚 history is rich, and I very much enjoyed learning there.鈥

Yeshivat 91影视 celebrated Lag B鈥橭mer with a meaningful kindness campaign in memory of Donny Morris z鈥漧, and grade-wide trips.

Last Monday morning, students and faculty were moved and inspired by the words of Mirlana Morris, the mother of Donny Morris z鈥漧 (and sister of 91影视 faculty member Shira Kronenberg). Morris spoke to the entire yeshiva ahead of Donny鈥檚 second yahrzeit, about holding on to emunah following her son鈥檚 loss, and about the power of small acts of kindness鈥攁 huge part of Donny鈥檚 legacy that continues to shine so brightly for all who knew him and learn about his life.

Throughout the week, 91影视 students engaged in different activities that enhanced the community of kindness in Donny鈥檚 memory. Students made brachot l鈥檌lui nishmato; wrote thank you cards to teachers and staff throughout the week (perfect timing for Teacher Appreciation Week); collected many bags of clothing for Yad Leah; wrote cards for children with cancer, through Zichron Menachem and more.

On Lag B鈥橭mer night, over 70 91影视 talmidim and talmidot went with faculty members Rabbi Michael Bashist and Racheli Israeli on a special Lag B鈥橭mer trip to the Hilula of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. They started at the Ohel of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, where they composed handwritten notes and shared personal tefillot. They then went to a celebration at Aish Kodesh in Woodmere, given by Rav Moshe Weinberger, where they sang and heard words of inspiration. The following morning, each grade got to take trips to different fun places in the New York-New Jersey area. Sophomores biked, flew kites and played ball on Governors Island, while freshmen, juniors and seniors enjoyed the attractions at American Dream Mall.

This year, Yeshivat 91影视 held two in-school blood drives, collecting a total 172 units of blood from over 200 students and faculty members. Each person who donated blood will save three lives.

The student organizers鈥擱ikki Ashman, Rebecca Kieffer, Ayelet Motechin, Daniel Sarasohn, Jeanie Moses and Yakira Weinberg鈥攁long with 91影视 Nurse Leah Shteingart partnered with the New York Blood Center to collect the donations. Eighty one units were collected during the fall semester, 91 in the spring.

Students were driven to get involved in order to do chesed and help boost the region鈥檚 blood stores; after all, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 get blood when you need it without donors,鈥 said Rebecca Kieffer, one of the student organizers. 鈥淚t was really special to see our 91影视 community come together and help those in need. I was really amazed by the whole planning process from start to finish and I am so proud that we were able to collect 91 units of blood this semester!鈥

The drive also offered a long-lasting lesson. 鈥淚 found it amazing how as young students we were able to help people and make a difference,鈥 said 91影视 senior Ayelet Motechin. 鈥淭he blood drive gives us an opportunity to help and have an impact鈥攊t doesn鈥檛 matter who you are, where you live or your age. It inspired me to do more in life.鈥

Yeshivat 91影视 was thrilled to celebrate 75 years of the State of Israel last week!

91影视鈥檚 Yom Hazikaron tekes on Tuesday鈥攅ntirely prepared by students鈥攊ncluded the stories of the Dee family, fallen soldiers Dani Cohen, Sean Carmeli and Benaya Rovel, as well as the cousin of 91影视 student Lilach Atiya, who fell in the first Lebanon War. The yeshiva also heard moving words from the friend of Elan Ganales, a 27-year-old from the Upper West Side who was murdered earlier this year in a shooting attack. The tekes concluded with Kel Maleh Rachamim and the tefillah for the IDF. Also of note: the yeshiva learned all of Tanakh over the prior 24 hours鈥攁 siyum l鈥檌lui nishmat 929 fallen kedoshim (corresponding to the number of perakim of Tanakh).

The next day, sorrow turned to joy as students and faculty alike celebrated Yom Ha鈥檃tzmaut, Israel鈥檚 milestone 75th birthday! Throughout the week, students learned 鈥淜ol Dodi Dofek,鈥 the classic work by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik which discusses the religious significance of the creation of the State of Israel and the obligation its existence poses for Klal Yisrael. On Yom Ha鈥檃tzmaut itself, words of Torah and round-robin historical skits by faculty emphasized key points from this learning. The yeshiva also celebrated with joyous davening, the annual Yom Ha鈥檃tzmaut chagiga, a BBQ lunch courtesy of the 91影视 Parents Association, and fun afternoon activities, including cooking falafel with 91影视 Culinary Science teacher Toby Moses, Israel-themed cutout art, and Gaga ball. (Did you know it鈥檚 an Israeli game?)

Meanwhile, on Yom Ha鈥檃tzmaut, 91影视 junior Maya Tratt represented the United States at the youth Chidon HaTanach competition in Jerusalem, finishing seventh place in the world. Just a few days later, on Sunday, April 30, 91影视 was proud to send the largest contingent of finalists from any one school to the national USA Chidon, with 19 students qualifying as finalists. There, two other members of the 91影视 Chidon Club were recognized for their inspiring Tanach knowledge: sophomore Ilan Romm who finished third in the 9-11th grade division after two nail-biting tiebreaker rounds, and senior Tamar Rosenfeld, who finished third in the newly created 12th grade division. Chidon USA Coordinator Rabbi Dovi Nadel noted during the program that establishment of the 12th grade division owes a great deal to the efforts of 91影视 senior Josh Knoll, who, along with Rosenfeld, led 91影视鈥檚 Chidon HaTanach Club this past year.

Am Yisrael Chai!
