Spanish 1:

We continue to have lots of fun while learning in Spanish 1! Students recently completed their project entitled 驴Qui茅n so yo? (Who am I?), where they were able to show off all they have learned this year, using a slide presentation to talk about themselves and their families. It鈥檚 hard to believe they had little to no knowledge of Spanish just five months ago! We have now moved on to discussing students鈥 daily life at school, such as the classes they take and the things they need to get through the day and complete their assignments. We鈥檝e also begun reading the short novel Pobre Ana by Blaine Ray, which is helping students pick up lots of new vocabulary while improving their reading skills. 隆Qu茅 divertido!

Spanish 2Spanish 2:

The sophomores are currently working on a unit on sports. While students now have a very good understanding and command of reflexive and 鈥済ustar鈥-like verbs, this unit is a fun way to review the material and to prepare for verbs that take a direct object. The students are currently working in pairs, learning new vocabulary and verbs about the sports they practice in real life. They will soon present their projects to their peers and educate them in an interactive way, asking questions in Spanish that their classmates will need to answer using the new vocabulary terms that they just learned about the sport.聽 We will soon be moving on to the聽past tense and how to use its different forms (the preterite and imperfect) in context. Students will begin a project about taking a trip to a Spanish-speaking country, which they will present using pictures of themselves in different scenarios, such as at the airport, hotel and sightseeing.

Spanish 3:

We have read selections from many Latin American authors this year, including Eduardo Galeano, Enrique Anderson Imbert, Rub茅n Dar铆o, Jorge Lu铆s Borges and Marco Denev铆. The stories have all played on the themes of reality versus fantasy, and have led students to explore their own creativity, writing their own dialogues and short stories using characters from the stories they鈥檝e read. In addition, we have reviewed grammar topics and tenses such as the present, preterite and imperfect, and are now moving on to the future and conditional tenses.Spanish 3

AP:

The Spanish IV AP class has covered numerous topics this year. We began the year by learning about the chagim鈥擱osh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkot鈥攊n 聽Spanish (隆claro!) using infographs from the website aishlatino.com. We also read an article, Jud铆os en la Espa帽a de hoy, (Jews in Spain today) by Juana Vera which talked about Spanish society鈥檚 views of the history of Jews in Spain. Then we moved into the topic of 鈥楲a identidad鈥, discussing how to define ourselves and our personal values and also how others define us. To see how one 19th century Spanish poet, Jose de Espronceda, defined himself, we read (and listened to contemporary musical versions of) his poem Canci贸n del pirata.

Spanish 4We moved on to the topic of food, during which students wrote, produced and starred in their own cooking shows. We also read several articles on the dangers of junk food. Currently, we are reading the short story Leyenda by Argentinian author Jorge Lu铆s Borges, in which Borges takes the story of Cain and Abel from Bereishit and writes about what it might be like if Cain and Abel were to meet up again after Abel鈥檚 death.

French:

The students in French 2, 3, and 4 are continuing to work on their speaking, reading and writing skills. By using online activities, the students have the opportunity to learn real-life dialogues, thus enhancing fluency and articulation.

Recently, French 2 students had the pleasure of singing Adele鈥檚 song Hello and Justin Bieber鈥檚 songs Love Yourself and Sorry. These songs were performed by French singer Sara鈥橦. The French version was shown and students sang along with the performer鈥攏o subtitles needed, since the students knew the English versions! A great experience to learn 鈥渓iving French!鈥

French 3 has had a busy semester. Each student wrote short stories (fairy tales) using the passe compose and the imparfait.聽 These tenses are important when discussing the past.聽 Some students chose to write original tales, while others used familiar fairy tales such as Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood.聽 They recently submitted essays on this topic: 鈥淚f I win the lottery.鈥 This activity allows the students to familiarize themselves with the use of the conditional tense. They also presented individual videos discussing what clothing was in their closets and when they wear this clothing, enhancing their usage of the necessary vocabulary.

French 4 also submitted individual videos in the form of a commercial. They used commercials that we read and heard in class and presented their own interpretations of this commercial.聽 Students used their own props鈥攕ome were quite original. Students are also preparing for the scavenger hunt to take place in the spring. They are preparing descriptions of objects to be found and where to find them.聽 The students in the level 2 class will be the participants.聽 This will help all levels comprehend the description of objects and how to follow directions.聽 Stay tuned for the results of this activity in the near future. Merci!

The goal of foreign language study is听肠辞尘尘耻苍颈肠补迟颈辞苍.聽 In the various courses we develop the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.聽 Can the student make an articulate sentence that can be understood by a native speaker?聽 This is certainly encouraged in the foreign language classroom – students learn basic sentences, and through repetition and substitution drills they can expand their knowledge and vocabulary.聽 They are encouraged to initiate conversation rather than just answering questions initiated by the teacher. Various listening exercises are done daily in class.聽 Teachers use various outside sources for reading, speaking and listening.

These objectives are achieved by using authentic resources including on line print, audio-visual, and traditional print resources such as magazines, newspapers, and short stories.聽 There is also a cultural component emphasizing life and values of the native speakers.

Spanish 1

We continue to have lots of fun while learning in Spanish 1!聽 Students are building their vocabulary at a rapid pace using engaging techniques such as TPR (Total Physical Response), in which students act out new words by following the teacher鈥檚 commands.聽 This can sometimes lead to crazy games of 鈥楽im贸n dice鈥.聽 It is tremendously rewarding to see how students (with no prior knowledge of the language) are now able to have a basic conversation in Spanish about their daily school routines, likes and dislikes, clothing, and their friends and family.聽 Students have enjoyed presenting their projects on what their lives would be like if they lived in a Spanish speaking country. They recently used technology to complete a slide presentation entitled 鈥樎縌ui茅n soy yo?鈥 in which they wrote about their personal and physical characteristics, their interests and their families.聽 隆Qu茅 divertido!

Spanish 2

We recently finished a unit on food and art.聽 In class we learned the difference between traditional and modern art and focused on two Spanish artists: Pablo Picasso and Diego Vel谩zquez.聽 Students worked in groups to complete travel brochures about cities in Spanish-speaking countries they wish to visit.聽 They discussed the various points of interest, customs and local Jewish communities. They were also required to explain how one navigates through the airport, the various check-in points, baggage requirements, and security process. Our students’ cooking skills were also showcased as they directed and starred in their own cooking videos.聽 We are now finishing up a unit on the media.聽 Much of class time is spent discussing current national and international events in the news in Spanish.聽 聽In addition, to bring together the theme of media and an amazing week of Shiriyah, students recently completed articles and 鈥榣ive鈥 broadcasts from the hallways of 91影视.

Spanish 3

We are continuing to cover Latin American authors such as Miguel Unamuno, Eduardo Galeano, and Gabriel Garc铆a Marqu茅z whose short stories have led us to explore issues regarding underdevelopment in Latin America.聽 Students have been perfecting their writing skills and recently wrote, directed and presented an original play.聽 In addition, we have been reviewing old grammatical concepts such as 鈥榮er鈥 and 鈥榚star鈥 and stem-changing verbs and learning new ones such as the future and conditional tenses.

AP

The Spanish 4 AP class has covered numerous topics this year.聽 We started with food during which students wrote, produced and starred in their own cooking shows.聽 We moved on to health and medicine where students presented dialogues on different health-related scenarios, read and presented articles on various current health topics in the news, and completed online surveys on health issues such as heart disease.聽 Our current topic, 鈥楲a identidad鈥 has us watching several videos about the life and identity of Latinos in America which has led to discussions on immigration and language.聽 In addition, since we normally take time to discuss the Jewish holidays when they come up, this past week we spent part of a class talking about the meaning and rituals of Tu B鈥橲hvat.

Spanish Club

This year saw the inception of our new Spanish Club. We are planning an educational trip to the Hispanic society of NYC and planning fun activities as we explore the varied cultures of the Spanish- speaking world.

French 1

French 1 is enjoying the opportunity to communicate by discussing聽days, seasons, time, food, activities, colors and many other major聽topics necessary for communication.聽 To reinforce numbers, we play聽bingo.聽 To reinforce classroom directions and parts of the body, students participate in a good game of “Jacques a dit” (Simon says).聽Students made power point presentations introducing their families and聽friends .聽 They described them using newly learned vocabulary

French 2

Students in level two French are continuing to build upon skills聽learned in level one.聽 聽Students have been involved in many of the聽same activities only at a higher level.聽 They recently wrote an essay聽in the past tense and continue to present original dialogues using the聽target language.聽 They examine on-line dialogues thus enriching their聽ability to learn everyday French.聽 Their favorite activity is to learn聽French songs and jingles which reinforce the facility of the language.聽The class was exceptionally enthusiastic about sending Hannukah
greetings in French.

French 3

As expected, students continue to build on skills learned in previous聽levels.聽 Many more class conversations about likes, dislikes, daily聽activities and future goals.聽 We have read some short stories and聽continue to review native speaker situations on line.聽 We have used a聽website which presents news in slow French.聽 Students will be working聽on presenting “TV commercials” and they are looking forward to writing聽their own individual fairy tale using past tense of verbs which they聽have just mastered.
