鈥淚t was deeply moving to have the dedication the day before Erev Yom Kippur, as we go in front of Hashem, clinging to a life of Torah,鈥� said 91影视 Principal Rabbi Eli Ciner.

After dancing the sefer Torah into the beit midrash, students were fortunate to hear words from Mr. Schulder (a 91影视 alumnus himself) about his cousin Ari, for whom the sefer Torah was dedicated. 鈥淚 was very close to my cousin, and although his passing is very painful, writing a Torah is a great way to keep his legacy alive,鈥� said Mr. Schulder. 鈥淗e was a man who loved to challenge himself intellectually and he also loved Yiddishkeit.鈥�

After davening, the freshman grade was treated to a seudat mitzvah, where Mrs. Esther Schulder, Saadya鈥檚 grandmother, spoke about her father鈥檚 survival of the Holocaust and her parents鈥� dedication to Torah as the central pillar of their lives. 鈥淭he Torah represented faith to my parents and, if they survived, their dream was to have their children steeped in Jewish education and Judaism,鈥� said Mrs. Schulder.

Yeshivat 91影视 is so grateful to be the home of this new sefer Torah. May the Schulder family, the students of Yeshivat 91影视 and the entire Jewish community merit to learn and grow in Torah over the course of the year and for generations to come. Chag Sukkot sameach!

Sinensky comes to 91影视 after having served as a yoetzet halacha in the greater Philadelphia area, Atlanta and Riverdale. (She will begin serving as yoetzet halacha for the Teaneck community beginning in July). She also served as an adviser and educator for the sexuality/intimacy curriculum for Atlanta Jewish Academy, and has taught similar courses at Ma鈥檃yanot and Kohelet Yeshiva. As an educator, Sinensky says she likes to lead a very student-driven class, creating a safe space for them to ask questions and receive accurate answers to their questions.

鈥淭he main goal of the class is for our teenagers to be exposed to information about their bodies, intimacy, sexuality and relationships, in a context where they get all the facts鈥攔eal facts鈥攃oming from a trusted, knowledgeable adult with a Torah perspective on all these things,鈥� said Sinensky. 鈥淎 lot of our kids get information from many other places and a lot of that information is not true or distorted,鈥� said Sinensky. 鈥淚t is crucial for our developing teenagers right now, and as they enter into marital relationships, that they鈥檙e not coming in with misconceptions that may negatively impact their intimate relationships; rather, they should bring with them an accurate and proper Torah perspective on the role of intimacy to set them up going forward.鈥�

Sinensky hopes that this education will reinforce the students鈥� desire to learn about and keep the halachot of taharat hamishpacha in the future. 鈥淲e want our students to have a positive experience from relatable role models so they will want to learn more when the time comes, so they can observe these laws,鈥� she said.

What does your average math class look like at 91影视? Well, you might be hard-pressed to come up with a typical example. 聽With over 36 different math classes being taught every day, no two are exactly alike. Yet one thing they all have in common is a curriculum-driven, student-focused mode of instruction. 聽

One of the ways math teachers at 91影视 reinforce key concepts is through the thoughtful use of technology, for the purpose of empowering students in their learning. For example, in one ninth grade Geometry class, the teacher used a game to help students learn about complementary and supplementary angles. Kahoot actively engaged every student in a game show-like competition, with no student passively sitting out of the lesson. 聽Seeing how much the students enjoyed actively learning through this technological tool, the teacher then created a SMART Board presentation where students themselves – rather than the teacher – “cloned” images on the SMART Board to piece together the angles formed by two parallel lines cut by a transversal. 聽The hands-on manipulation of the geometric shapes helped the students learn which of the angles were congruent. 聽Since neither of these lessons was taught by frontal instruction, the two exercises gave the teacher real-time insight into how much the students understood. 聽She did not have to wait until she collected homework or corrected their tests; both she and her students knew right then and there what their level of understanding was, and had the opportunity to work on learning the material with the help of their peers. 聽

Another method of integrating technology in the classroom was successfully executed by a different teacher, in her Algebra 2 and Calculus classes. Using pre-created classroom activities, students explored new concepts using the dynamic graphing software, worked through a series of questions on their computers, and received teacher feedback and input from their classmates. In Algebra 2,聽students developed the distance interpretation of absolute value inequalities and made connections between inequalities, verbal statements, number line graphs, and solution sets. 聽This is an important skill for their high school math studies, and also crucial for further studies in any science field.聽 Meanwhile, in Calculus class, students used a series of dynamic graphs to explore one-sided limits. 聽They were then reminded of the definition of continuity and were asked a series of questions to assess their understanding of the definition. 聽They could use the software to help develop their answers and get additional assistance from their classmates.聽 With immediate feedback and real-time manipulation of the various equations and their respective graphs, the students quickly acquired a more nuanced and deeper understanding of the various factors at play in a graph.聽They also got teacher feedback and input from their classmates.

Flipped learning is another wonderful way to create student-centered learning. 聽In several Algebra 2 classes, teachers used videos to introduce the ideas of matrices. 聽Playposit is a program which allows users to embed questions, polls, and reflective pauses into videos which they can then share with others. 聽Watching the introductory Playposit videos at their leisure the night before the lesson allowed the students to learn the difficult concept of matrices at their own pace. 聽The embedded questions forced them to reflect on the material being presented and also gave them the chance to replay parts of the video again if needed. 聽Both teachers, who have taught Algebra 2 for years, marveled at how quickly all the students were able to show mastery of the skills the next day.

The 91影视 Math Department looks forward to the remainder of the year. 聽There is much to teach, and our faculty will continue to work on progressive and engaging modes of instruction with a goal of keeping the learning in the hands of the students!

The Department鈥檚 first event was 奥丑补迟鈥檚础笔笔 on September 13^th, where seniors were treated to pizza and a hands-on night of beginning the college application process. From the CommonApp to institutional apps such as YU, Rutgers, Maryland and CUNY, 91影视 college guidance counselors helped seniors get started on the nuts and bolts of completing their college applications.

This fall, we are welcoming approximately 30 colleges to 91影视, where our seniors get to sit in on not only college information sessions but also meet the admission reps who will be responsible for evaluating their applications. We鈥檝e already welcomed several schools, such as Yeshiva University, Princeton University, Binghamton University, New York University, Columbia University, Brandeis University and IDC Herzliya 鈥� Raphael Recanati International School.

We are in high gear helping our students work on their college application essays. With 161 seniors, lots of college apps and a wide variety of essays, supplemental essays, short answers, etc., we are busy assisting our seniors with writing 聽their essays with impact, excellence, power and heart.

On November 10^th, we will be hosting a College Financial Aid Night for our seniors and their parents. The event will feature Robert Friedman, Director of Student Finance at Yeshiva University, and a nationally-recognized speaker in the field of college financial aid. Mr. Friedman will discuss the changes to the FAFSA, as well as State and Federal Loans, Grants, Work-Study, and much more.

Exciting things are also in store for our juniors, who took the Practice ACT on September 26^th, and will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on November 2^nd.聽 Once the results come back from these two diagnostic exams, we will begin working with our juniors on their college planning. We look forward to our 11^th Grade Parents Meeting on November 1^st, where will be covering a host of timely college counseling topics.

We are thrilled to begin another year of college advising at 91影视, and we鈥檙e confident we will have another banner year of college admissions.

As per its annual tradition, 91影视 sent its freshmen to the Catskill mountains for a four-day weekend retreat where new students got to break the ice with their teachers and each other, learn the ins and outs of being a student at 91影视 from their senior advisers, and revel in the trademark 91影视聽ruach聽for which the school is well-known. The weekend also offers students an opportunity to give over聽诲颈惫谤别颈听Torah to their peers and grapple with questions of identity and perspective on the bigger picture, pressing issues for any teenager in the world today. A special Shabbat聽蝉丑颈耻谤听given by Rav Jonathan Schachter, Rosh Beit Midrash at 91影视, impressed upon students the meaning behind聽Selichot, which Jews around the world began reciting on聽motzei听厂丑补产产补迟.

鈥淔reshmen Retreat is a really special weekend and it鈥檚 heartwarming to see the excitement on students鈥� faces as they get to know other a little bit better and away from the classroom,鈥� said Mrs. Sarit Anstandig, a member of the Tanach faculty and Freshman Grade Dean and one of the many teachers who attended the retreat. 鈥淪tudents are bright-eyed with anticipation for the opportunities that lie ahead of them at 91影视, and the retreat is a wonderful entry into their high school career.鈥�

鈥淭he retreat was an amazing opportunity to meet peers I didn鈥檛 know before and learn how to be a Cougar,鈥� said Caroline Waxman 鈥�20. 鈥淚 especially enjoyed the bonfire on Motzei Shabbat because at that point, we had all become very comfortable with another and it made it such a moving experience.鈥�

While the weekend itself has merit on its own as a fun way for students to relax and to assume leadership roles through speaking opportunities and being proactive during icebreaker sessions, the retreat also positively impacts students for years to come. By spending four days together and becoming closely aligned with the mission and values of 91影视 in an informal but still-structured environment with carefully-planned programming, 91影视鈥檚 caring and supportive school culture is solidified and helps students realize their potential in academics and co-curricular activities for the rest of their high school experiences.

鈥淭his was my sixth Freshman Retreat because I had often gone with my mother,鈥� said Eitan Bernath 鈥�20, whose mother, Mrs. Sabrina Bernath, is the Director of the Math Department. 鈥淭his retreat was obviously the most special one yet because it was my first one as a student. While I鈥檇 always seen what went on during these retreats, being able to directly participate in the student ice breakers and sessions with senior advisers and 91影视 teachers made it a much more meaningful and personal experience.鈥�
